Pete Mathews

Captain Pete Mathews, owner of Wild West Marine Ltd., has been a fixture on the waters of the British Columbia coast since his childhood in the Southern Gulf Islands, where he honed his passion for sailing, fishing, and exploring.

From a family with deep maritime roots—his father's heritage tied to sailing and lifeboats on the Welsh Coast, and his mother's side dedicated to fly fishing—Pete's connection to the sea is both profound and personal. This legacy was further cemented when his parents launched one of the first renowned yacht charter companies in British Columbia.

Pete's professional journey began in 2002 as a BC park ranger, overseeing 46 protected areas on Northern Vancouver Island. This role not only deepened his respect for the natural world but also equipped him with invaluable skills that he would later use to pivot to the eco-tourism and fishing guide industry in 2004. With over 20 years as a guide, Pete has cultivated relationships with top industry professionals and has gained unparalleled expertise in the remote coastal regions of Vancouver Island—from the Brooks Peninsula and Cape Scott to Desolation Sound and beyond.

Today, as a seasoned mariner and sport fisherman, Captain Pete embodies the spirit of adventure. His extensive knowledge and experience make him your ideal guide to the rugged, breathtaking landscapes of Vancouver Island’s coast. Join Captain Pete for a voyage and learn how to safely navigate and appreciate these magnificent remote territories.
